I was at a junior school the other day talking to kids about some stuff they can easily do using Computers and one smart chap asked me if i can help him with setting up a Youtube video (he liked a funny video on Youtube and wanted that to be his screensaver) as a Screensaver on his Windows XP desktop.

This article is dedicated to that smart chap from that smart school who asked me about those steps. While i helped him right away, i thought of putting it up on the blog for those of you would like to that as well.

Please follow the steps mentioned below to setup your Favorite download video ( Youtube is just an example, you can setup any video as a screensaver) as your desktop screensaver. The article will follow through three steps which will be required to setup a Youtube video (or any other video) as a Screensaver.

1.) Download your Favorite Video from Youtube or other video sharing website.

What will you set as a screensaver if you do not even have a local copy of the video on your computer, therefore, the first step in this process is to download your favorite video ( which you wish to setup as screensaver) on your computer. You can follow the detailed steps mentioned in my earlier posts titled [How-To] Download Youtube Videos with 3outube or Youtube video dowloads: Can it get better? or Download High Definition Videos From YouTube Using Free Video Downloader

Once you have downloaded the video, follow on to step 2.

2.) Encoding the .flv file into .swf format

The video file you download by making use of the steps listed above will be in a .flv format. In order to be able to set a downloaded youtube video as a screensaver, you will have to encode the video into .swf format.

In order to encode videos from .flv to .swf format, you can use a freeware utility called SUPER.

a.) Download SUPER from here and install it on your computer. Once you have installed the software, launch the program.

b.) Next add the Multimedia file ( in your case the .flv file) and select the output format as .swf for the encoding.

If you wish to do the step 2 online ( i.e. without installing any utility on your computer),you can try out Media Convert. Simply specify your input format (.flv), upload the file and specify your output format (.swf) to get a .swf file.

Once you have the .swf file, you are ready to move to step 3.

3.) Creating the Screensaver from .swf file using Instant Storm

InstantStorm is a Windows freeware tool for creating Flash based screensavers with many advanced features. All you have to do is to choose an SWF file, set screensaver parameters and compile an executable installer. All 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows are fully supported.

You can download Instant Storm by clicking here.

The output file generated by Instant Storm is a .exe which you can directly double click and install. Once installed, your video screensaver is ready for use.

The screensaver created using the above listed steps will have both video as well as audio.
