There are confirmed reports on the internet that Google Phone which is being manufactured by HTC is going to hit the markets by January 2010. The phone is believed to run on Android 2.1.

Leslie Hawthorn, who is a program manager for Google’s Open Source Team, says that the phone is “beautiful”, while Jason Howell mentions that it’s compatible with AT&T, has a capacitive display and its “homescreen has new visual enhancements like animated desktop wallpaper.”

What appears from the tweets is that employees at Google have got hold of the new phone and they seem to be showing it off to their friends and family and also tweeting about it ;).

While on Twitter the buzz is loud, Google too has confirmed on its Official Google Mobile Blog about the mobile device given to its employees for testing purposes.

At Google, we are constantly experimenting with new products and technologies, and often ask employees to test these products for quick feedback and suggestions for improvements in a process we call dogfooding (from “eating your own dogfood”). Well this holiday season, we are taking dogfooding to a new level.

We recently came up with the concept of a mobile lab, which is a device that combines innovative hardware from a partner with software that runs on Android to experiment with new mobile features and capabilities, and we shared this device with Google employees across the globe. This means they get to test out a new technology and help improve it.

Unfortunately, because dogfooding is a process exclusively for Google employees, we cannot share specific product details. We hope to share more after our dogfood diet.

In the past, Google has said that when it comes to mobiles, they are not building the hardware, but with the latest reports, it appears to me that HTC might be the hardware guy while Google will be able to stick their logo on the phone. It will be interesting to wait and watch what Google comes back with after its done with the “dogfooding”.
